a deadly shooting that happened just a few hours ago. they tell us a man was shot in the city's western edition. alex savidge is live there now. what can you tell us so far? >> reporter: we are getting very limited information from police this morning. that is because it's so early on in this investigation. a sergeant that was out here confirmed a man was shot and killed. he was found right over near this corner. near the intersection of hayes and webster. an anonymous caller reported gunfire in this area around 2:00 this morning. we'll show you that video. officers were out here for most of the morning. police tell us the victim was rushed to the hospital after suffering at least one gunshot wound. he died there from his injuries. homicide investigators searching for the shooter involved here. a sergeant told me they don't have a description on the person to put out. in just a couple minutes ago i talked to one woman who told me she heard one gunshot and saw this crime scene. >> it sounded like a gunshot and i knew somebody was dead. police know that sound. it's bad. >> reporter: so as

-case scenario to worst-case scenario. what we have today, from new york city, and all to have the boroughs, from new york city and also from bergren county into parts of new jersey, all the way up to portland, all under blizzard warnings right now. there are 23 million people that live in that blizzard warning right now. 23 million affected by this blizzard. and so here's the best-case scenario for the at least amount of snow. a computer model that doesn't believe the merger is going to happen. so 9.7 in albany, 7.5 in new york city, 13 in portland, only 12 in boston. you can only hope that that would happen. this is the miss. this is if it's the best possible scenario. this, now, is the other side of the coin. the storm that does combine, the moisture does get in there, and you get the cold and the warm to mix, 34 in boston, 26 in providence, 14.3 in new york. which one do you believe? well, it's still going to probably come down a little bit farther and farther, as these models get closer and closer to when the snow starts, compared to when the snow ends. we talked about that yesterday, how it

in this country. let's start off our coverage with deb feyerick in st. patrick's cathedral in new york city, the center of the american catholic tradition here. deb, what are you hearing this morning? what a shocker. >> reporter: it's fascinating because the resignation took many here by surprise. we spoke just a short time ago with the archbishop of new york, cardinal timothy dolan, and he says he was startled when he heard the news. he said there have been rumors at various points that pope benedict xvi would be stepping down, but when the formal word came that he was resigning, it took the entire diocese, certainly by surprise. now, we did speak to him a little bit earlier. he said, you know, pope benedict understood that, in fact, he was in frail health, that even back in 2005, when his name came up for consideration to become the pope, he mentioned that he was getting older. he is going to be 86 years old in the next two months. and so he understood that. and being pope is a very grueling kind of job, the cardinal said. people are always trying to get near you, trying to jostle, trying

will replace him. following developments live from vatican city. what have be learned in the news conference? >> reporter: good morning, john. in fact, father frederico lombardi is holding the news conference, and providing a few details. not a whole lot new. a few bits of information that are helping us to figure out what is going to happen here in the next few days. one of the things he said is that as you mentioned that there was no specific illness involved in the pope's decision to resign. he did say that the pope had had his pacemaker battery replaced recently. a normal operation, no problems. some of the italian press speculating that perhaps there was a problem with that operation. and another thing that they talked about was the idea that the pope's last general audience will be wednesday, the 27th of february and that will be the last big public audience before he resigned on the 28th, and i -- i'm willing to bet -- this is just speculation on my part, that most of the college of cardinals will want to be here for that. a chance to have a sendoff for the pope, a very public sendoff
